Couples Therapy & Relationship Work
WHAT HAVE YOU MADE IT MEAN?
Relationships are shaped not only by what happens between two people, but by what each person makes those experiences mean.
Behind conflict, distance, resentment, betrayal, shutdown or sexual disconnection there is often something deeper — attachment wounds, fear, shame, unmet needs, trauma, protective responses, family patterns and different beliefs about love, safety, intimacy and belonging.
My approach to couples therapy is integrated, relational and trauma-informed. I incorporate Somatic Therapy, Attachment Work, Internal Family Systems (IFS), creative and experiential processes, intimacy and relational work, Acceptance and Commitment approaches, values, generational trauma, conflict resolution and recovery work.
I create a safe, non-judgemental and empathetic space where couples can begin to understand not only what is happening between them, but why it keeps happening.
What Is Underneath the Conflict?
A disagreement about money may actually be about safety.
Sexual disconnection may carry rejection, shame or fear.
Anger may be protecting hurt.
Withdrawal may be protecting overwhelm.
Defensiveness may be protecting shame.
Repeated conflict may be activating old attachment wounds.
Rather than simply asking “Who is right?”, we begin asking:
What happened? What did I feel? What did I make it mean? What did it activate in me? How did I protect myself? How did that protection affect my partner? What do we need now?
This allows couples to move from reaction to understanding, blame to responsibility, disconnection to connection, and conflict towards repair.

Trauma, Attachment & the Nervous System
Past experiences do not always stay in the past. They can enter relationships through anxious attachment, avoidance, hypervigilance, shutdown, emotional reactivity, people-pleasing, perfectionism, distrust, fear of abandonment and difficulties with intimacy.
Trauma-informed couples work helps each person understand their own triggers, protective responses and nervous system while also recognising the relational cycle being created between them.
Understanding does not remove accountability. Healthy relationships require responsibility, emotional safety, boundaries, repair and meaningful behavioural change.
Intimacy & Connection
Intimacy is more than sex. It is the experience of being seen, known, emotionally safe, respected, desired and able to remain yourself while being close to another person.
Together we can explore emotional and sexual intimacy, desire, vulnerability, disconnection, shame, mismatched needs, relational roles and the experiences that may be influencing closeness in the present.
Healing the Past. Attuning to the Present. Creating the Future.
Couples therapy is not about creating a perfect relationship. It is about learning to understand one another more deeply, communicate honestly, recognise destructive cycles, repair after conflict, rebuild trust and create a relationship that reflects the needs and values of both people.
Sometimes the question isn't simply “What happened?”
It is “What have you made it mean?”
